Should You Pick a Sedan Over an SUV?

Sure, everyone seems to be buying the latest SUVs these days, but that doesn’t mean other cars like sedans are not a good choice anymore. In fact, for those who prefer a traditional car at an affordable cost point, a sedan may be a better choice.

The Price Difference

Most sedans are more affordable in comparison to SUVs. Even if money isn’t really a concern for you, you could get a luxury sedan at the price of a more basic SUV, or you could opt for a moderately-priced sedan and customize it with all the bells and whistles. So, unless you really need an SUV for your daily commute or lifestyle needs, it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money on an SUV.

Financing Becomes More Expensive

But, you’re probably thinking of all the awesome financing deals you could get. Sure, these deals may make even an expensive, luxury SUV seem like it is affordable. And, who can turn away those affordable dealership financing offers that run up to 84 months, right? Well, the truth is that while these financing offers may be extremely tempting, it’s best you don’t opt for them. Keep in mind that if you opt for an 84-month loan, you will be paying off your new SUV for seven years! That’s a long time, and you’ll have to end up paying a considerable amount of interest. What’s more, even if you want to get a new car after about 5 years, you may find that you still owe a lot of money on the loan. Instead, sedans have a lower cost, which means you can pay them off a lot faster, helping you save more money over time.

Fuel Efficiency Matters

While SUVs, today, are a lot more fuel-efficient in comparison to their predecessors, they are not quite as fuel-efficient as smaller cars like sedans. Of course, you’ll be sacrificing some engine power with a sedan, but if you need a car to commute to work every day, you’ll likely value fuel-efficiency more than engine power.
